A few years back my wife and I made a conscious decision to simplify our life. We bought a very modest, hand-made log cabin in the woods of Maine. To set the tone and distinguish it from the expensive McCabins with large lawns and boathouses, we promptly named it 'Thistle Dew'.

To say the cabin needed a lot of work would be an understatement but we thoroughly enjoyed it. First we had to provide indoor plumbing and electricity (I know... lots of folks do without both but we're spoiled). Next on the list was a shed for my workbench and tools. Then I started making practical items to furnish the cabin. Being 30 miles from the nearest hardware store, I learned to plan ahead and became very resourceful. Whenever possible I made use of 'found' materials. Twigs became wall hooks, branches became door handles, stones became coat hooks and logs became furniture. Before long I was making things for neighbors. Visitors to the cabin told me I ought to sell the items I was designing and building.
Loons awake me
So here I am, enjoying every minute at my 'Rustic Workbench' in the woods of Maine. The loons wake us in the morning and the owls lull us to sleep at night. We hope you'll find something here that will help you take a step back from the hectic pace of your life and appreciate the beauty and joy of simple things as we have.
